Reexamining Honorifics, Special Lecture from Earlham College, USA
The Japanese language incorporates various levels of honorifics, which are essential to effective communication and reflect respect, social hierarchy, and interpersonal relationships. These honorifics adjust based on the nature of the relationship between the speaker and the listener. A common example is the honorific "san," which is widely used across all ages, genders, and social statuses. It is appropriate in both formal and informal settings and is an essential aspect of daily interactions.
Last year, Iwate University had the privilege of hosting Professor Taranee Cao, a Japanese language and linguistics expert, who presented her research on teaching the effective use of honorifics.
The lecture began with an engaging word cloud activity, prompting participants to reflect on the question, "What do you think of Keigo?" This was an effort to involve everyone and gather diverse perspectives. Japanese honorifics, or keigo, are often perceived as challenging to learn and teach. Traditionally, research focused on their correct usage, tracing their origins, identifying errors, and outlining the rules for proper application. However, more recent studies have moved beyond a rigid, rule-based approach, emphasizing the flexibility of honorifics and their dependence on specific social contexts.
Professor Cao's presentation built on research examining how politeness and speech styles shift according to the situation. She began by discussing the role of honorifics through the lens of indexicality theory, which explores how words convey particular social meanings. For instance, she explained that the frequent use of honorifics in conversations today often signals formality, professionalism, or education. She also highlighted several factors influencing the choice of honorifics, illustrated with real-life examples. Through the framework of discourse politeness theory, Professor Cao argued that traditional notions of honorifics, such as their role in showing respect, are not solely tied to the honorifics themselves. Instead, respect and politeness emerge from a combination of linguistic elements.
In conclusion, Professor Cao's presentation challenged the conventional view that honorifics directly convey respect or politeness. Instead, it emphasized the complexity of their use, depending on the specific context.
In addition to cultural events, Iwate University also supports academic initiatives aimed at broadening the knowledge and perspectives of students, instructors, and staff, such as this lecture. These efforts contribute to fostering a strong international community and creating an environment conducive to learning for everyone.
