Origami at Global Village!

The Global Village started 2017 with a lively workshop on origami. Iwate U. students involved in the SCIP Program designed and conducted the event, while practicing how to introduce Japan's beloved paper folding art to children and adults in both English and Japanese. Participants learned about origami's origins, and made colorful shuriken (ninja throwing stars) and a frog that can actually hop!

新年最初のグローバルビレッジは折り紙ワークショップで始まりました。フィリピンへの海外研修渡航を前にした岩手大学の日本人学生が、留学生や地域の子どもたちに英語で折り紙について説明し、皆で手裏剣やぴょんぴょんがえるを折りました。様々な年齢の参加者が日本語と英語で日本の伝統的な遊びを楽しみ、日本人学生にとっては英語で折り紙を説明する大変よい学びの機会となりました。

Our next event will be an English practice presentation run by SCIP students bound for Accedemia di Belle Arti di Carrara, Italy. Featured are the presenters' own artworks: bamboo mizuhiki wine bottle ornamentation, a wax-laden mini treasure chest made from locally produced washi, and a washi and ink lampshade inspired by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

次回のイベントはイタリアに海外研修へ行く学生が、竹細工の水引や和紙の宝石箱など、自作の芸術作品を持ち寄り、英語でその説明を試みます。
